Trigger Finger

Trigger Finger Symptoms, Common Causes and Treatments

What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, which affects one or more flexor tendons of the hand and makes it difficult to bend the fingers or thumb. There are pulleys on each finger that allow finger tendons to pass through. Therefore the fingers can move freely in full range of extension and flexion. Trigger finger is thought to be the inflammation and thickening of the finger pulleys and the progressive inflammation of the tendon, and the tendon sheath may cause pain at the fingers and clicking during finger movement. The prevalence rate is around 2-3% in normal population, but it increased to 10% in diabetic population. Repeated forceful contraction of finger flexion, for example when carrying heavy shopping bags, prolonged writing or typing, rock climbing etc., is associated with the development of trigger finger.

Common early symptoms includes:

  • Persistent soreness at the base of your thumb or another finger
  • A bump or lump near the palm at the base of the affected finger
  • Tenderness surrounding the base of the finger
  • A clicking or snapping sound during movement
  • Stiffness in the finger

Self Assessment

The presentation of the condition may differ according to the severity. It can range from painless clicking during finger movement, to painful catching of the finger digits and being locked in flexion. Moreover, you may have swelling and stiffness of the fingers especially in the morning. You might need help from the other hand to straighten the finger being locked in flexion. Sometimes there can be a palpable painful nodule at the finger joints. If you have the above signs and symptoms, you may have trigger finger.

Treatment as Physiotherapists

Physiotherapist may utilize manual therapy and acupuncture to relax the tightened forearm and hand muscle, and to mobilize the stiff finger joints. Modalities such as shockwave therapy and laser therapy may also be used to improve blood circulation, promote tissue healing and pain relief. Specific rehabilitation exercise and education play a main role in the rehabilitation. Physiotherapist will prescribe exercise to strengthen the hand and forearm muscle, as well as the kinetic chain of the whole upper limb, to solve the problem in long run.
