Why Is Physiotherapy Important After Surgery?

Many people assume that once surgery is completed, the problem has been fully solved. In reality, surgery is often only one part of the recovery process.

After orthopaedic surgery, patients commonly experience:

  • Pain and swelling

  • Joint stiffness

  • Muscle weakness

  • Reduced mobility and balance

  • Difficulty returning to exercise, sport, or normal daily activities

For example, after ACL reconstruction surgery, the ligament may be repaired, but strength, coordination, and confidence often need to be rebuilt through structured rehabilitation. Similarly, patients recovering from total knee replacement frequently require physiotherapy to regain range of motion, walking ability, and functional independence.

The goal of post-operative rehabilitation is not simply to reduce pain. It is to restore function, rebuild strength, improve movement quality, and support a safe return to activity.

Pre-operative Rehabilitation (Prehabilitation)

Prehabilitation focuses on preparing the body before surgery to improve post-operative recovery.

Our pre-operative physiotherapy programmes may include:

  • Pain and swelling management

  • Improving joint mobility and flexibility

  • Strengthening surrounding muscles

  • Gait and movement training

  • Education regarding post-operative expectations and recovery phases

Research has shown that better physical conditioning before surgery may contribute to improved surgical outcomes and a smoother rehabilitation process.

Prehabilitation is particularly beneficial for patients preparing for ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator cuff repair, and joint replacement surgery.

How We Approach Post-operative Physiotherapy

Recovery occurs in phases. Early rehabilitation focuses on controlling pain and swelling, protecting healing tissues, and restoring joint mobility. As recovery progresses, treatment gradually shifts towards strengthening, balance training, functional movement retraining, and activity-specific exercises.

For athletes and active individuals, later-stage rehabilitation may include running progression, agility training, jumping and cutting drills, and return-to-sport testing to reduce the risk of re-injury and improve confidence.

Depending on the stage of recovery, treatment may involve manual therapy, joint mobilisation, soft tissue treatment, therapeutic exercise, strength and conditioning, and the use of rehabilitation equipment when appropriate.

From Daily Activities to Return to Sport

Every patient has different recovery goals.

Some people want to walk comfortably, climb stairs, and return to normal daily routines. Others aim to return to football, basketball, running, tennis, or other high-demand sports.

At MOBILIZE, we focus not only on healing but also on restoring meaningful function. Rehabilitation programmes are designed around each patient’s lifestyle, work demands, and activity goals so that recovery translates into real-life performance.

Collaborative Orthopaedic Care Network

Some patients may require specialist orthopaedic assessment, imaging, or surgical consultation during their treatment journey. To provide more comprehensive care, MOBILIZE collaborates with a network of orthopaedic specialists.

When appropriate, we can help facilitate referral pathways so that patients receive coordinated support from diagnosis through rehabilitation. For post-operative patients, communication with the broader medical team may also be maintained when needed to ensure that rehabilitation aligns with surgical goals.

We believe that strong collaboration between physiotherapists and orthopaedic specialists can improve the patient experience and support better recovery outcomes.

Highly recommend!
