Achilles Tendinitis

Types, Symptoms and Treatments

Understanding Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is a common overuse injury affecting the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often develops due to repetitive strain, sudden increases in activity, or improper footwear. This condition is particularly common among runners, athletes, and individuals with tight calf muscles or poor foot biomechanics.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis

  • Pain along the Achilles tendon (especially in the morning or after activity)
  • Stiffness and tenderness around the back of the heel
  • Swelling or thickening of the tendon
  • Pain that worsens with activity (running, jumping, or walking uphill)
  • A cracking or creaking sensation when moving the ankle

Common Causes of Achilles Tendinitis

  • Overuse or sudden increase in activity (e.g., running long distances without proper conditioning)
  • Tight or weak calf muscles, leading to excessive strain on the tendon
  • Poor footwear that lacks support or cushioning
  • Flat feet or high arches, affecting foot biomechanics
  • Repetitive high-impact activities, such as jumping or sprinting
  • Aging and decreased tendon flexibility

Assessment and Treatment

Consulting a healthcare professional is vital for accurate diagnosis and effective recovery from Achilles Tendinitis. Our experienced therapists will conduct a thorough physical examination to check your range of motion and evaluate your medical history.

Treatment options may include:

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy involves soft tissue release, deep tissue massage, and joint mobilization to relieve tension in the Achilles tendon, calf muscles, and ankle joint.

Advanced Modalities

Such as shockwave and laser therapy to enhance recovery and provide pain relief. It increases blood flow to the Achilles tendon, enhancing tissue repair, breaks down calcifications or scar tissue, which may be present in chronic cases.

Exercise Therapy

Rehabilitation exercises play a crucial role in treating and preventing Achilles tendinitis. A structured strengthening and stretching program is customized for each patient. Exercises may include eccentric strengthening , calf strengthening, ankle and foot stability training, stretching exercises on the Achilles tendon etc.

Biomechanical Assessment

A comprehensive gait and movement analysis is conducted to identify abnormal foot mechanics or walking/running patterns that may contribute to Achilles tendinitis.

Taping & Orthotics

To reduce strain and provide support, physiotherapists may use kinesiology taping, heel lifts or custom insoles during recovery phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mild cases may improve with rest and proper care, but chronic cases require physiotherapy to prevent long-term tendon damage.

Recovery time varies based on severity. Mild cases may improve within a few weeks, while chronic cases can take months with proper rehabilitation.

Avoid high-impact activities that aggravate the tendon. Instead, switch to low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling while undergoing treatment.
