Understanding Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is a common overuse injury affecting the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often develops due to repetitive strain, sudden increases in activity, or improper footwear. This condition is particularly common among runners, athletes, and individuals with tight calf muscles or poor foot biomechanics.
Symptoms of Achilles Tendinitis
- Pain along the Achilles tendon (especially in the morning or after activity)
- Stiffness and tenderness around the back of the heel
- Swelling or thickening of the tendon
- Pain that worsens with activity (running, jumping, or walking uphill)
- A cracking or creaking sensation when moving the ankle
Common Causes of Achilles Tendinitis
- Overuse or sudden increase in activity (e.g., running long distances without proper conditioning)
- Tight or weak calf muscles, leading to excessive strain on the tendon
- Poor footwear that lacks support or cushioning
- Flat feet or high arches, affecting foot biomechanics
- Repetitive high-impact activities, such as jumping or sprinting
- Aging and decreased tendon flexibility
